Our Guest Conductor, Michael Zaugg

The music of Nova Iberia took us on a musical journey through time and space, featuring Spanish music of five centuries and two continents. This journey began with Juan Cererols in Spain, the first known composer of many to incorporate the famous opening theme of Bach's St. Matthew Passion into his own music. Cererols began his musical career in the Monastery of Montserrat in Catalonia, like composers Ferran Sors and Pablo Casals, whose music was also featured in the program.

Maria Knapik led us across the seas to South America with the pulse-raising Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5. From Brazil, we traveled to Argentina, gathering Latin and South American friends along the way to perform the much-loved Misa Criolla by Argentinean composer Ariel Ramírez. A collection of romantic and sentimental folk songs rounded out the evening, expressing the spirit and soul of South America.
