Come at 7:30 PM for a pre-concert talk by conductor Michael Zaugg.
Our concert for Holy Week features two contrasting masterpieces
by
contemporaries Domenico Scarlatti and J.S. Bach (both born in
1685).
Scarlatti's remarkable Stabat Mater, scored for ten independent
voice
parts, is an outstanding example of Italian polyphony, with
melodic
motifs and dissonances reminiscent of Monteverdi. Jesu Meine
Freude is the
greatest of Bach's six motets and represents the finest
achievement of
the German Baroque.
