Fall 2011
Dear Friends of the Cantata Singers of Ottawa
The summer has come and gone; the fresh winds and the falling leaves, the schoolyards full of children and the music rooms full of practising choirs bring the fall back into our awareness. Our 48th season is in full swing, as we prepare for our first concert.
This is a season where Cantata Singers joins forces with some great Canadian artists, friends we’ve made while performing on concert stages. We are very excited about our collaborations. Sharing a creative process with other like-minded people is always a fulfilling activity. We hope you will agree and partake in our vision of creating harmony through sharing creative moments.
Our season opener features the All-night Vigil by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Known as simply ‘the Vespers’ this monumental work is a favourite of performers and audiences alike. For our October concert the renowned St. Lawrence Choir from Montreal will join us. You will hear the combined forces numbering over 100 singers in a powerful rendition of this Russian-Orthodox repertoire.
In December, we invite you to an evening of stories and singing. CBC Host Adrian Harewood joins us on stage, telling cherished Christmas stories. The Cantata Singers will round out the evening with Seasonal Classics, and I am sure you will find yourself humming along to a tune or two.
Holy Week 2012 will see the third instalment of our Stabat Mater series. Our first two editions featured music by Bach, Palestrina, Nystedt and Scarlatti on the theme of Mother Mary standing by the cross. This season, we will collaborate with Ottawa’s premier chamber ensemble Thirteen Strings in a performance of Joseph Haydn’s Stabat Mater. He wrote the work at the age of 35 and conducted the premiere himself. For this performance we are fortunate to have with us four young Canadian soloists: Dawn Bailey, Meagan Zantingh, Jeffery Boyd and Luc Lalonde.
As you might know, our most important collaborator is our audience. I hope you will show us again this season your continued support and join forces with the Cantata Singers and their musical guests.
With my best wishes,

Michael
