The Cantata Singers of Ottawa, the Central
Children's Choir, soprano Irena Welhasch-Baerg,
pianist Stéphane Lemelin, dancer Chipo
Shambare and NACO flutist Joanna G'froerer are
among the artists performing Saturday at Christ Church Cathedral as part of
a fundraising concert for WaterCan, an Ottawa-based organization that
provides clean water and sanitation to communities in developing countries.
Proceeds will also be shared with the Cantata Singers, the 45-voice choir
led by director Laurence Ewashko.
This is the second annual concert to bring the Cantata Singers and
WaterCan together for a benefit. Last year's event offered a lovely mix of
classical pieces and folk music, and this year's program will be similar.
There will be a wide range of music, including choral pieces, operatic
arias, art songs, folk songs and African music, almost all of it with a
water-related theme.
The program includes Zimbabwean folk songs, Paul Simon's Bridge over
Troubled Water, and music by Schubert, Rachmaninov, Puccini and John
Rutter.
The performance is at 7:30 p.m. at the cathedral, Sparks Street near
Bronson Avenue. Tickets range from $35 to $50 for adults and $25 to $40 for
seniors and students. They will be available at the door.
